Compiz Instead Metacity When Starting Gnome

Suddenly Metacity was being loaded in lieu of Compiz when starting Gnome. I tried restart compiz with:

compiz --replace

but it did not work and Metacity kept itself up and running.

What worked for me was open gconf-editor (Alt+F2 > “gconf-editor” > Enter) and navigate trough “desktop > gnome > session > required_components and set windowmanager key as “compiz”. The next time you start Gnome, Compiz will be loaded.

i need to do the same to try gnome-shell windows manager. i use it for (around) two weeks and now I change to ubuntu 11.04 (unity), which gather several features of gnome 3 (such remove bottom bar, windows tile and rebuild ubuntu menu to a search based one) and implements application menu (pass the the windows menu to top bar – like mac), i thought both very productive (compared to ubuntu 10.04 – gnome 2)
